mental-health

Identifying the physical requirements of children is fairly easy. Things like nutritious food, warm clothes, and a safe home are some of their basic needs. But when it comes to their mental and emotional needs, you need to be patient and understand what they are communicating through their verbal and non-verbal cues.

Children with good mental health develop social skills, are able to think clearly, and can quickly acquire new skills. With the help of good friends and the presence of encouraging adults, they can grow up to be responsible and healthy adults.

In today’s blog, we discuss five basic needs of children for good mental health.

1. Providing them with unconditional love

It is extremely important for children to be surrounded by love, security, and acceptance in the family. They should never feel that the love they receive from parents and other family members depend on how much he or she is able to achieve. Children can only become confident when they receive unconditional affection and love.

2. Nurturing their confidence and self-esteem

Parents need to be their child’s cheerleaders for life. From their first steps to their ability to learn new words, parents need to acknowledge their achievements and allow the child to explore safely. Setting realistic goals that are at par with your child’s capabilities also boost their confidence and self-esteem. In case they fail a certain test or a game, refrain from using sarcasm to reprimand them. Instead, offer assurance and let them know that you believe in them. This will encourage them to strive to be better versions of themselves.

3. Encourage them to play

Playing is fun for children. It is also their food for development. With adequate playtime within their daily routine, they can learn to be creative, learn problem-solving skills and learn how to control and regulate their emotions in various social settings. Playing with peers can help with the development of being a team player.

4. Limited exposure to television and the internet

The TV or the smartphone cannot be a babysitter. Parents need to be selective of what their children are watching on television. While some shows can be educational and entertaining, parents need to limit the hours a child spends in front of a TV.

5. Proper guidance and instructive discipline

Children need to learn how to be independent and they need to explore as well as develop new skills. But they also need to understand that certain behaviours are unacceptable. Parents need to understand how and where to draw the line.

On one hand, they need to help the child be aware of improper behaviours and impart a clear understanding of their consequences. On the other hand, they need to do it in a manner that doesn’t cause the child to retract in a shell or harms them in any way.

Be fair and consistent with your guidance and discipline. Your children will carry these social skills with them to school and various other social settings. If you must, be critical of certain behaviour and not the child. Parents also need to set good examples for their children as we know children mimic the behaviour of their parents.
